Nico Rosberg had good start and quickly eased away from the competition, Max Verstappen jumped to second but Daniel Ricciardo in the second Red Bull car lost momentum diving past the tardy Lewis Hamilton and was overtaken by Perez's Force India and fast starting Vettel's Ferrari. Further back, Nico Hulkenberg took sixth ahead of Kimi Raikkonen, who got a late five-place grid drop because of a gearbox change. Lewis Hamilton again had a terrible start and before the first corner was eighth.

In the sixth lap Kimi Raikkonen attacked Nico Hulkenberg at the first corner and took sixth place. Lewis Hamilton attacked in the same place one lap later. In this round Fernando Alonso tried to overtake Felipe Massa again at the first corner, but was unsuccessful. While Nico Rosberg led with 4 seconds ahead, Kimi Raikkonen overtook Daniel Ricciardo, but presentable and so allow Lewis Hamilton to reach dangerously close to it. In the 10 lap battle is about the fourth position among Perez, Ricciardo, Raikkonen and Hamilton, divided in under 3 seconds. Max Verstappen complained from the tires, and first entered the pits Alonso. Then they did Verstappen and Ricciardo.

In the 13th lap in the pits entered and Nico Rosberg, followed by Sebastian Vettel. The driver of the Mercedes gets new tires with hard component and goes out before Verstappen. The both Ferrari cars are also took hard compound tires, and also Perez. Round later in pit enters and Lewis, but returns to seventh, overtaking Raikkonen and Perez. So after the first pit stops the biggest loser was the driver of Force India, who was left behind Ricciardo, Hamilton and Raikkonen. This was followed by several changes in the standings, but without any specific thrills.

Nico Rosberg was controlled things without taking much out of his detuned engine. When he led 42 laps dominantly, received a warning on the radio to be careful and to drive faster. The difference between him and second, Max Verstappen was 4.921 seconds. Hamilton came third at almost 6 seconds, followed by Vettel.

In the 46th round Hamilton was in DRS reach of Max Verstappen. Five laps from the finish the battle for second place became serious. But Hamilton just could not catch Verstappen - the youngest driver in F1 was too fast in the last chicane before the main straight.

Max Verstappen revealed that he wasn't use his battery power to defend from Hamilton in the DRS zone on the main straight, but instead using it on the back straight between Spoon Curve and 130R.

This is 53 career podium for Nico Rosberg, the first career victory in Japan, and 21st overall. Nico Rosberg increased the lead in the Formula 1 Championship to 33 points ahead of Hamilton and expect many more excitement to the end of season which left just four races.
